About Snake River Wildlife Refuge

Located in southeastern Idaho along a stretch of the Snake River, the Snake River Wildlife Refuge encompasses a mosaic of wetlands, riverine corridors, and upland habitats that support a rich diversity of wildlife. Established to conserve waterfowl and other native species, the refuge protects crucial habitat for migratory birds, raptors, fish, and numerous mammals. The river’s meandering channels and backwaters form ideal locations for birdwatching, especially during migration seasons when waterfowl populations peak. The area also provides important spawning grounds for native fish such as the endangered Snake River salmon and steelhead trout. Historically, this region was occupied by Native American tribes and later utilized by trappers and settlers drawn to the river’s resources. The refuge today offers opportunities for limited hiking, wildlife viewing from overlooks, fishing, and small watercraft such as kayaking and canoeing along calm river sections. Notable landmarks include scenic river bends, dense riparian forests, and quiet wetlands that create prime habitat for species diversity and photography. Visitors appreciate the refuge's tranquil, natural environment away from heavy development, making it a favored spot for nature enthusiasts and anglers. Due to its protected status and habitat sensitivity, public access is managed to minimize disturbance, ensuring sanctuary for resident and migratory species alike.
